Harnessing insects to upcycle organic waste into a high-quality fish meal and fish oil replacement
Enthos is a waste to feed business that uses Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae to upcycle organic food waste into high-quality protein meal and oil, addressing a critical need for sustainable protein sources for aquaculture and animal feed. Insect meal and oil has been demonstrated to be a great alternative to fish meal and fish oil.

Globally, one billion tonnes of food goes to waste each year and one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted, according to the UNEP’s Food Waste Index Report. BSF larvae are ferocious consumers of organic waste and grow over 200 times in a feeding period of 15 days.
Enthos is using the BSF larvae to upcycle organic food waste into high-quality protein meal and oil.
This both addresses a critical need for sustainable protein sources for aquaculture and animal feed, as insect meal and oil has been demonstrated to be a great alternative to fish meal and fish oil, and also reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill. The added benefit of the latter is a reduction in methane emissions from decomposing organic material in landfills.
Feedstock is one of the main sources of cost for insect producers, but Enthos benefits from cheap and plentiful organic waste supply in Colombia and has designed a proprietary food waste reception system to optimize nutrient availability and eliminate vector contamination.
The combination of location guaranteeing optimal climate conditions for the tropical Black Soldier Fly, a capital efficient plant design relying on semi-automated processes and year-round availability of food waste enables Enthos to provide sustainable, circular feed ingredients at costs that are attractive to livestock producers while being financially profitable.
