                    <h1>The international shipping sector has taken a major step towards reducing its environmental footprint. At a meeting of the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, member states agreed on a ground-breaking deal aimed at cutting emissions from the global shipping industry.</h1>
<p>Starting in 2028, ships will be required to adopt cleaner fuels or face penalties. This deal is the first-ever international mandate on emissions targets for the shipping industry. While the agreement marks significant progress, critics argue it lacks the ambition needed to meet the world’s climate targets. <p><strong>Why does this matter?</strong>  Shipping is a major emitter of greenhouse gases, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1x3m2ndW95jsWP6lZ3nVW6VS8SK6KCPg7W5Xfz4z4GYq-MW8vLg1F3NGpTvW5zDw7W1g0hkPW1MGT2y1D--xNW6LPpFM45bQ9cW6r-gCK6Xrm94W1-ZpBh8lCdQNVm8C146QJHf4W1CjvGR5bGC6wW6kzbrV48jLtJVZPP1v75-9SpW4Zj8Zm95cwtNW1rm5lp3hh6DYW5JlLFJ89dlsCW43Gf4K8svRCVW3DL7YX5x5C6RW1hyxx36LtB6QW3-DKvr1FyJyHW8PFyWF6b1BcVW3S-dNm7q56nFW4HLq9S3yzSVrW8WqFsD6f2GNLW3Zgctt8881NXW45Fhlv4nyFrpW3rqS8Z3g9HysW3TlNf8585ZRnVBTTdh50-gKhW6zFcZg3Dr3mCW2TkLYV3wX-xSf20xRzx04">responsible</a> for 3% of global emissions. Yet, the industry is not covered by the Paris Agreement, posing a significant regulatory gap. In 2023, IMO member states agreed to a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with interim targets of reducing emissions by 30% by 2030 and 80% by 2040 compared with a 2008 baseline.</p>
<p>However, the initial agreement did not specify how net zero would be achieved and negotiations on concrete measures have been <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1d3m2ndW8wLKSR6lZ3ljV7Mqjn5lyhhXN7sP1L7BCqRxN4HDqkqN-wW_W70ScG48GwhznW1blvqq5DD8dlW31JV1h33VYcmW6NmQqN3pW_g6W7rB6Nz87w-XsW1Lwdn42rZY2WVxNGtB3ksDX7N1yFYyfV7DSYW4RwLLf6gwG7kW10P6yG1DhPvCW4-hh304cksKrW1-7Lng5XxnnBW2snS1785NN02W23RvVX4LmF2gW5H1kwC4w_lkkN8M3KCp5NNTDW7gR9Y13RvRN5W4c0S_2822-QmW1cL6Cc8ljCTtN50fqMrBrd8rW3tQ-n87L1Fc-W3Fl1Fl4DxfG9N16_qCYrqphtW5sDyLK8JHn1gW1qvmmJ6Fb4w8dP1Fxs04">slow-moving</a>. The latest framework represents a breakthrough with the newly agreed policies slated to shape the trajectory of global shipping going forward.</p>
<p>The new emissions intensity targets have been reduced to 4% in 2028, which will rise to 30% in 2035. And an upper target of17% by 2028 <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1x3m2ndW95jsWP6lZ3mCW4ttzKL3ZDZHqN3QH-KzmS_m1W4g16fD2mSGK2W7pytzw6bQYGLW2LKCwT24jkv_N8ZjmHCVy2rNW5f2Kxq3JD8c4W1L7sP289JG_cVWS8PL3mCBZFW81K8-Z89NncqW7ZdKWn7NcJ0xW3_KLdm8b6KnLW5gWntH8hD6BwW5bL19T8lCZQ1W7nfpwM1gYhhfW4ZHpkL2r9D5ZW7jQw335h4TBkW4D2sHv1YgyY2Vxh-Zq5g9G5XW5TX07R2rk6V5W7J-S7710wHGkW3gX4c290BKclW8LxZ298TCfCLW97TbZN8WrvMzW5vXGcS588bwlW48MBtS6HCpghW8rt02X1rT_VCW6BrbMl71H3k4W4LWd8n49RmshW1N49-p5WD0nbdmmCpv04">increased</a>  to 43% in 2035. To meet these targets ships are expected to switch to less polluting fuels.</p>
<p>Ships unable to sufficiently reduce their emissions will pay a penalty. If failing to meet the lower targets, ships can purchase “remedial units”  at $380 per unit, which funds the newly established “net-zero fund”. Or, in a carbon credit-style exchange, ships could <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1x3m2ndW95jsWP6lZ3n0W8PYLXf3D3S8VW83VjKg1fbF3RW3__Hx41DdvW0W6lf43z1BGqnTW8XhBbW2Pk8HkW3jxLnV85sXdTW91Wnhx1rqXmYW5lQl-Y6cmgk9V5V7Wp3lnTV3W46xppQ4wL2BqW1J0-HM8XJdvQW8pw3JZ2y1xWmW1dGyjL3z1rT7W1_lyBL7gFLkyW35bGWY4NLS2ZVdqVyc1tPP52Vg-0jB8Whz_nW541cbx6lwVKmW798KM87zBkWgW8d2wk94-WGDrN3JYqt1n6dwqN3P2vkjpntTQW5_rCnb4Z4gvqW74MWvV67T_w5W5bXsfY1bzNjzW81t-Dg8JQf9FW4ZJ3Rr7XLJS_VMRrDV3ZWtNhW5mfCRf90YY73W8tNvYL2_Rkm3f8Lmg_F04">purchase</a> surplus units from others that have excelled in reducing carbon intensity.</p>
<p>The second tier of penalty applies to ships that meet the lower targets but fail to reach the more stringent upper aims. These ship owners would pay $100 per unit into the net-zero fund. Overall, these agreed costs and targets fall roughly in the middle of targets proposed by member countries.</p>

The company&#8217;s high-accuracy weather forecasts and performance models help ships reduce fuel consumption and emissions by providing optimised routing.</p>
<p>Given the IMO’s new rules, Sofar Ocean’s solutions can support the maritime industry’s efforts to meet emission reduction targets, improving fuel efficiency and lowering overall emissions.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr0l3m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3nRW3CwhQC1HBNJ1W5nd4xx30xHQPM9hqG2tvL85F1s4Hdjd1-vW5RVx9k3n2xtjW2W0spg64GsqpW6cm6181CZ47kW2ygbKP81hTlrW73854H4d0R5GVr8mwd8YDH5fW852c9z8zGMkNW1KgYyg5bkmMmW4dprWd5kPt-2VvdpjT5pyW93W9fkGTm8kmWfxVYR97h5cyWHcN66Sq5GZ3kpRW8-Sj137yP4syW4gNdJN3MlV4JW8lSBlS5fgJ8zW3wHz1N7_qJ63W8yMJgY1VHcgNf1R8hQY04">Goodcarbon</a> enables businesses to build long-term carbon credit portfolios through nature-based assets. Its platform supports projects like reforestation and land conservation, which contribute to offsetting carbon emissions. Though they have focused on land-based projects, Goodcarbon is well positioned to become a key player for the maritime industry.</p>
<p>With the IMO’s focus on carbon pricing, Goodcarbon’s solutions offer a vital tool for companies in the shipping industry to meet emissions targets while supporting the transition to a net-zero future.</p>
<p>Although the deal at the IMO represents a significant shift in global maritime regulations, the framework is not without <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1x3m2ndW95jsWP6lZ3nkN75Xx-nVw_KFW2h38rP65rdQNMGcQWZ9HKRcW3LDwQp5H4c0fW2zxfqF1w2GhVW1BpRkj1nm6-yW3MlDFb5dnWtJW4kW3yq8lbDL4W5KK2g-7CrG4fW1d8G311JPnKgW6qQSmn6Fz1PpW4NK6gT4c9R7nW5RxyBN6-pWgFW70X3qZ1XHxDTW4wwcg066vcpBW3tcLdz3tmLwyVzhsVH2Y2jGMN51q3pT_mD78W6BgP7146Zl9hN8Xxwt6v96yNVMKwfp8R65lvW4j0gsp9kPjTnN2Snm6z_BXNgW7vrzc73vCNhgVhrngY7z4NSkW2qhLVV1BBt5-VGYVxZ2HD0BlW7MS01P1WzrcjW26SzDt6HJ3fZW4F2qDJ69jJxHf7DS1w204">controversy</a>. Some emerging economies and oil-producing nations, such as Saudi Arabia, opposed the carbon pricing measures, arguing they would place a financial burden on global trade and raise commodity prices.</p>
<p>The US also <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1x3m2ndW95jsWP6lZ3lxW5LxvgR1JP8j_W2vbL746FykRxW6d4Yjw4tHTLzW6rYl9515Fyz3W8SJkZc8GS5xmN3rhpxcY5fMZW16_ZJy1McNwrW24_8k84wYYJBW6JpnZ53839ZMW1mp9zh7MM29xN3jk6CGHbCmjVZ7gSz2VTwHSN4Tp4QBGxjtlW1jmcVX4xnT0-VyDhW83Q8K0wW3Rd94J51j0dlW14zsJC7fyJNwW5mGgJz8rZy9tW6LT7dM3dWklYVpT8rx8CR1YSW4Q-dQp46j8fBW5kj7y95C_1rZN5vTvdlQP9hKW4px8Lc6wTgShW7XK5b_4Qtv-JW13p5_Q8mSy0SVBLfvd67Gr9kW8PpwBJ54j3tbW9gRgn27LvsPXW8S_8KN6CJLPcf3dCRfY04">withdrew</a> partway through the negotiations, calling the carbon pricing system “blatantly unfair.” Despite the opposition, the deal was passed through a majority vote, with the framework aiming to raise funds for climate action, including supporting the adoption of low-carbon fuels.</p>
<p>Some critique has been cited by the <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1d3m2ndW8wLKSR6lZ3pYW9grnQ62LYc74W7cwm3V8Rfkk2W6dZfqD6SfhDnW7q8bpV6r7M1KW3L9B2v2s6GklW8WM61h4qC7hnW3-Qvdx5HQ3RgW7_3L9M4YYMgnW4tH1YK8CMh1zW77b-wT2mv56wW57x6_p568vtYW71YRN48GZCDXW1krySy7h8STpW81Jnlk3WHq9VW2D8Z375J3hQXW1H2GbT4LjHbSVWWycs5pC0n-W1dMwRf3cY04-W80b--144XKc9W7prZvH1Z8zjNN3j3TpQxG205W46ZPc_7JYql6W6RklGT8lhJQKVWdlpq7JJ6_gW217SY877x40nW2cRdSl2bfTPYV3XJH575tzXBMz3r2pwgbkYf8NfrbC04">UCL</a> and the NGO coalition Transport and Environment. which <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr0F3m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3nTW1MhhfH3JZ3QyW8VsKMy4bLw7fW8_JjPV7FZdMPW7VT8MF3-BBYqF1f5Gz1TyJYW9gw0lq1JjdDSW5Q4qn45S8lyXW88GzPr6tPpdTW4Xz9VS4H5y1fW7JsnVr3tKgccW87rCjq3CHmg4VPDk1r2Q4cvKW8rH-FJ10XpLhW1M3NbS4Y09SbW4_T50D898lB5W6-y1qy6gPCZsW17RYvX1MXKNQW88Pf_l4ncZFsW3TKrhb3y83WWVqPpkW1GvVNvW48qs8z68Rv81W6sW2bg5yPpwXW65SH5_7w-kx5N51tlV0Nc_JFf4YQmlC04">found</a> that the framework would be insufficient to meet the new targets, given that 90% of emissions will <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VXhmkf5lzX1tN8FJqYnqrXJmW2nfwL35v_S4tN7vvr1x3m2ndW95jsWP6lZ3l-W1Z1zQn3j68JBW7xw4Kv1x-774W3h98WL4t9mxkW2DYXnh1MXKMbW50X6-r2p5S3LW5gQyQ34dkNWPW5gNmr48Mm6KwN3hM4_C97s7PW8vQjV36TZCvqW97D01Y8nG-vVW3vYypn1m6jbqW75Dk-24YMYG7W3bYX2H1Lpct2W1kWV3h3PYqnhW3j-jqg942QZNW5dgKHr2qyJf1W19lB1Q7fX-sTVZs3gg4p8hjmW5nsMf-8WMqxDW8z11Sf18vdwpW48N2Ht29f-c9N6yxH8x80RZPW6zJBd5156vx_W1DxVk944j48-W4ld19V1nDcv5Vk0ZGz2YK0xdW1xXs9L8nY6_LW7txJ-Z34hGlKW6fkHX93ZzYZkW1YykJg2bs7fYf60nQQ204">escape</a> penalties under the IMO&#8217;s rules. The UCL research group sees this agreement as &#8220;weak&#8221; and a watering down of previous targets from the IMO.</p>
<p>The IMO’s historic agreement takes a crucial step toward reducing shipping emissions, setting clear targets and penalties for non-compliance. Yet, many critics argue that the deal lacks the urgency and ambition required to align with global climate goals, especially as it faces resistance from key stakeholders. Success of the agreement will depend on stronger actions and broader collaboration in the coming years.</p>

                    <h1>The shipping industry, responsible for 3% of global emissions and critical to 90% of globally traded goods, is at a crossroads.</h1>
<p>As international climate targets become more ambitious, the sector is under pressure to cut emissions by 40% by 2030 as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently announced. This shift requires adopting alternative fuels, such as ammonia and hydrogen, alongside digitally upgraded ships using technologies to improve efficiency. However, the path to decarbonisation is fraught with challenges, from the high costs of green fuels to the need for extensive workforce retraining. (<a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV6g5kBVqW50kH_H6lZ3lvW7-1Shx6KQgYZW7z0k_K6MXqr9W2Cr9NS5w_Z0JN7fwcwckl-SQN77cHjk-J7f7W1MZvPR2R7xn8N1Rs9wHBGTtjW3PhdFb4L3w2sN6k2Cy2M9sMKW9jGzLh45Fw4LW3prt_C1q_Nd3W7rjNct7syk-6W6Fy1ns39Px_BW6FXCfB9jkdtCW3YjbK55VBkfMN5Pb5KYPp0mmW2wWP1z6_vWn_W838yf664zWdqW8lgVmy16YXkwW5X0byy6LybzyW4xRVL57Z4nC6W2ZrmM08_kSKrVl3xtZ94J-09W15yf-Q81bXzDW5FrbKN12VBVmW8JtDLS1wj6gfW71NBT72qhhQyW8dRNmp4GYvTYW6q03Zz6h-lxpW42sMrP1RZLvhW3y2yG32QzlQFW4-KLY41w5XXkf6BQTqR04">Reuters</a>)</p>

                    <p><strong>Why does this matter? </strong>Decarbonising the shipping sector offers an opportunity to drastically reduce global emissions and align with the Paris Agreement’s climate objectives.</p>
<p>Innovations such as Sofar Ocean’s <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV783m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3ksW84FssV2NtCXhVyr7_L6pvLwPW662Dbc31rfRcW5pHQ687dP2TxW4ws1Hh1bVWdgW6wc79p7cJ61WW2VxDGx6KF1zKW5cSbZl6yC5L3W1zn0g44CFyNbW2Gx2t858Tv8ZW5MgqWS7R23qdW7G7Zs34-DrZbW2csg1t8JSr5wW6Cg3v26DWmGkN8bjRw16nY2QW81jXbZ693mtqW8CtsZb6wsXgpW2Dw0Q_580yfSW5pLHTr3mkclTW6D28Dn87RGPGW37Vr1R5sXvcYW84m1kg6hT7Wcf7t1pS604">Wayfinder platform</a>, which uses real-time ocean data to optimise routes and minimise fuel consumption, exemplify how technology can drive transformative change. Additionally, the regulatory atmosphere is further incentivising the green transition for the shipping sector.</p>
<p>Two major policy changes are forthcoming – the EU’s FuelEU Maritime <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV7s5kBVqW7lCGcx6lZ3m5W5hfNVw9cwtrWW29ShBj1MsNCWW6K6ZGK8Fkzh4W6KP7hN4sVr01W1Lc5VW6hcszvVQQjk31BF_tfW8cyPQs8kNrM1W5JMJ6d7l7ZSSVxPmH89lSTxLW1P_T0d1qDYHVW5hTxSD675cXvW7TV9Tj5jHSg6W2N42Wk4m49CdW6DTdWv21GrZdW18MNqW7FnvkFVzKy582-yqbNW4k7MX07NJ_K0N6rdhJHYXJ4BW2FbjzY6bmQn_W7tcv8b818RXsW48FV0p5KB9VDW98GHk01xXphGW7Zh-xh8W9-MfW8B3NNF4FS8sxW8VjgHq7-wyyKW3br8V21G-jldN7kdytVH9hghW7xWbjf8mH3thW7n3Yqb6KHxdnW5hqKJl6kRh1XVrX_369gwMQkV-1QQx6t0cL4W1D86_x7bNsvXW8GL3RT1405WSW645l_q9kgf7LW7jZj877sk7RyVqS0Qb68XsWYW5Cb2JH7d8nqwW2yPf4b43kyFHN3s_WFNRLMqpf3_Vtj404">Regulation</a> came into effect on the 1 January this year,  while the UK has <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV6g5kBVqW50kH_H6lZ3p5W39pbv05K5DrDW9l1Jqg547tGlW6cb_MS4dc5JpVWdshd1w6NgCW1RxN7N69cR0dW8N-YW28fzz8FW7qZBzr4szmymW2_02l550pKSfW3z40YG8zh-7_W4FwnzK60lstTW1196GP4QZbGZW40mn2z1xYb0sW35bfm31BkKRCW50rjkJ71WdpBW7FmlKp5ZdjSLF1_FpCRSdY0W989g7l1N8WmHW8MSrt-3ZvxLcN6d3vC5r_r5FW4hQTbq4hq_KmN517GrXkfGPFN71JSMDqRv-FW9m0-sy3crM3WW97v3lx45rb9tVrCzzV6DFGxzW5JZmvr94fbqpW34J8-v6v_GZ5W4xhs7y8lgC7vW5lr8vN26SR25W3hVwpb3Tp40tVzlrrJ3w_2RCW8S3kdB3QM6M0f7MN_Lv04">proposed</a> the inclusion of shipping in its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) by 2026 – which are pivotal in encouraging low-carbon practices.</p>
<p>A primary barrier to lower carbon shipping is cost. Fuels such as biomethane, produced from organic waste including manure cost nearly <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV7s3m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3kLVZFVmJ1W8QPQW1ZPcX325jyFXW1Hy5Df2cBc9RW2lwrYb5sfv50W2gVrpW2WvSjnN7sHtZRj66fsN4D32L9XQ5p9W9hNDXM1mD9sDW5RCjdM2HzRVhW3hXZ7k2hrgxTW2v31BQ1Q96cdW53vZ091XF5-yVh7Rpq6ZwHwHW4Vsbks4Tt8pzN6v5WygYbD18N2nHpFv-kzrZW3lrwVZ4wQlqGW3GBM8N9cDSLVW2N0SWy5lfVwQW7sNFxR5qJTRfW6F-NtB5HR_pFN6d2xmfxG_n6N16NN6lqKCq6W5DgNRS4jlzZ_f2tvzvd04">double</a> that of liquefied natural gas – $21.03 per Gigajoule versus $11.90, respectively, making widespread adoption financially daunting. A second challenge to a green marine transition is the training required to safely and correctly use alternative fuels.</p>
<p>A computer-modelled study suggests that the shift requires upskilling an <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV6g5kBVqW50kH_H6lZ3pMW74w2lh1MTxqqVclJk-1HhDY3W3Y5Qql3hhFmzW50vQCL64bJZVW7X9TmF8bVJxJW6lqrgR8qGVDDV1FGCB3Y_yZWW5GrsqS17-_yLW1LHYfv8b9w1GW3TMfBH3Px98nW2-N6x-6kmQBlW4TZ04X4ml5XkW18zFcl985wBNW14fql-8DtV1NW87Dn1M1TvCyNW67t_Wf7JZfXLW3g44YL99VtM2W5Gtcpj6Xds0kW4HB6_x2MqRZcW2KYp1f54b0d8W3cp0Xj1D_g0xW46zHVV62TwR2W96qdJC7S6cYjW8Dt3Ys5G5PwlW6qByl52pqjQQW1VVzS32xnsxcW2-LGD03mspgNW7ycgdf8LfLLRW8281Yh5n3frGW7qLhrX5ygZdyW281lHk657lyPW84pvY14TcXKTf29vwdR04">estimated</a> 450,000 seafarers by 2030 to safely manage hazardous fuels like ammonia, expected to rise to 800,000 by the mid-2030s.</p>
<p>Technological gaps also compound the difficulty. New equipment for emissions reduction and fuel efficiency <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV6g5kBVqW50kH_H6lZ3mqW6gNJ7K6-g7K7W8kKlzx74cZgHVn8CgC3pWl6tW9krmD55CQPcSVkD7Qp1l9nggW3-l4T74sZ4KHW80k6MG3_Yz73W8tWrKH8q9ShXVZRw8T2lR8KJW7nZVnm69hWkMW4PL4Cq13n72tW2LHkrt1LwzM7N9d2Kd-NdbQYW4Mmnjp8wGC3tW4smd8W92k1CyW7Cm-mr5WkgkwW8N85sK8z0rF_V1N9_n8z9vjXN2cLgv1MjZ7cW5Lk9y24tMk1qW8yTYD0385xv_W33Gs-r32p315N5NNl7RbpV4BW4lGVvl3VRJZcW1VL0yH4RJ7p_W8n332F6K8js1W6_BqWw51kBBGN4SVjz071B0vW41SBwq5P6XjyW8sHKSN7S3kw4W3cPFcV7-w6GLW6wmrKw37NyZff6cdK9Y04">requires</a> heavy investment without assured returns. Furthermore, regulatory uncertainties make it <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV6g5kBVqW50kH_H6lZ3pDW5JFJXF2lhmxgW2p4mq28KKRZTW2nBb312Jc5CbW3j3BTg2LZfjdW42_VQF6LMS7PW4tkS1_4GrBv2W8pY1Mx7JNDP8W4kVxCr5Z6hXqW6smk8740Fv26W5HfYh86QRJmdW3BdgYp5bkVVhW8DX-HT5BvHJ3W1yJYGC7-wtSSW8Ln-JZ2G8q39W4sCCFF8cRSyrW3ks2Dk5FLwtQW3sqzQm4jfcYtW6d-mWx1QRXTpW1pKsGk9jP1gBW1WCZJp28gv_7N5n6Jbj37nVcW3v5GTj1vBYT9W8vFc7J6L_gGVW6Rp3w17NdNjXVTDhJK2_3KlZVLg68J5WsNCbVjHNDm31mnZJW7WPTCF1yR32cW31FmGQ5QnYPKV5QVx95mnWnSW8wQRYH5WCxzZW1QYdRk1ZbBzJf26f6ns04">difficult</a> for shipping companies to plan and attract capital for green transitions.</p>
<p>Despite these obstacles, industry collaboration is yielding promising results. The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (<a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV6T3m2ndW69sMD-6lZ3mNN6PvQVwlTLxMW38ZSR85YHZGLW7Gf0dF6b3jBKW4qSpNq2Zg6gSW8QCPsk8k35_VVFHkvc6X9gZ2N1G0QvTBt3QCW6dj78T8_ny7nW24HhmC8nF6HCW8yC-fg1dr4YVN7MFc406g_NnW7WJ5yS86X58XW57KHp54-CfsmW6lKt5p19QZ3kW8VBC961VMTR9W4LT8gs3XG49SN16-0ZqPx3hlW4BGtzk6QKzS8W7j9qqh4Q8bGlW604j292p1Ssyf7pWjns04">ZEMBA</a>), comprising major companies including Amazon and Ikea, is incentivising the use of low-carbon fuels by absorbing the cost premium.</p>
<p>Through this initiative, vessels operated by German Hapag-Lloyd travelling from Rotterdam to East Asia from 2025 will run on biomethane. This is expected to <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV7s3m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3prW3SYNSc800b1pW848tz42kB1lrW5CXqLx745gFtW73bJZS5lYsVLVfjxvF6Pf8qMW46FWB24qswqrW6Rlwcw8mmSDNW2jjzCP7QKghgW8XGdR073q9-NVrn12z4zcZjrW2tny8H4lCHd6N877RXgrdr8vW3s0nJw1C9LscVW-J9w6rNgY6VRHG3D8_LkNnW4zmKjh2xMSktW5ffYB46DM_B0N33FRc0b-J_GVgPpTB1yGGG5W4vbd_q3gZrDTW7y6zp167srkGW1HkhNf4p8CW9N5hPxnc1vSgPVynH_C54FVntf2Xc9Bv04">prevent</a> 82,000 mt of CO2 emissions over two years.</p>
<p>The most promising alternative fuels to decarbonise the shipping sector are biomethane, ammonia and hydrogen. Biomethane, derived from organic waste, can <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV7s3m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3nBW730TSZ973dzgW5VtV_v4Gc3mDW2Qs2tz2kBMHnW2JmBlh1T7_6BW2bxkGN5g0L8SW8ls1HV4HB79sW2yWPFN91W2RVW6HqCVB1B41h0W2_HP0H8-BPjgN4djT1Kq2V1wW2qv6Nv39VQRsW3dVNwl3Fzv2bW1DynP828kT0TW1syBhT6Yc3ZTW73k3yT5VPGY_N3__7H-k3cccW8sQWkv6Py8NCW7K2n7m282VB1W43W9CS1Qgj-PV8W0S-2Ylz4QVShZ-Y5tZXcHN7ZqkjlPpJ6yVVzd0D348z6mW5m2PFM1FZy3nf7lNxM804">reduce</a> emissions by 90% compared to traditional marine fuels.</p>
<p>However, its cost and limited supply pose challenges. Green ammonia, a carbon-free fuel, is <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV783m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3p_W2F1LpS3ZJwz7W6LwzsJ2RbyF5VdvlKS3hxp2RW8zm2-t5WrxkqW5jVKxv2Ps38vW2WSvTr6NYNZmN7nf2P_NhMBZW24Gmmm7vyJc7W9fJ64d3gtMM7W78mgwx7cDjKcW4svLVm56rkVcN75GFpYTjpJsW15vxl_1QGJ3MW5pxRWH6RpFLsW1lh9j39jw_skW3B3w2J91vGlJW4L-Z13246_1PVy7B7K4GxqTjW7bWm8864wzFdN5N4SXJMB172W5ZdNf51yCLR8W99pfT97V1cPmf2f3PkP04">created</a> by combining renewable hydrogen from water electrolysis and nitrogen separated from air in a modified Haber-Bosch process, powered entirely by renewable energy.</p>
<p>Ammonia and hydrogen are <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVFWQg1Hq-62N1j89B8Lnc44W8XrjSc5qF7ZBN3wqV783m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3pkW17CZkt73Kp-cVfnnvR60pmt5VkVPRt3r3dYgW8BMy6W96GM7zMWTGxwkYryhW2wmdX62NQYB-W1zSJ4C8_gBqLN2H65M9w0TttW1-nQbr1PQcsFW7SHBcC8gV7zjW8n16bM2xYBRFW2g44-98Hs0rcN3j6KkwDSP88W7Vlqkb4JsW96W7KlcSP8glrJvW53npvH8sjSyNW2YC0gy38WzslW1NkcyW73VG63W27xSrf8-9wZlW4ShKFX8_FCWyW6PTXS63N-5xWW9fxQlb5B-V5tf7YFQ1g04">emerging</a> as viable alternatives, though their adoption requires significant investment in safety measures and port infrastructure.</p>
<p>Beyond fuels, advancements in ship design and digital tools, such as real-time emissions monitoring, are critical to improving efficiency and sustainability.</p>
<p><a href="https://ocean14capital.com/portfolio/sofar-ocean/">Sofar Ocean</a>’s global network of ocean sensors provides accurate weather forecasts and performance models, helping vessels optimise their routes. These innovations reduce emissions while offering a scalable solution for the industry.</p>
<p>The road ahead is increasingly defined by collaboration and regulation. <h1>The international shipping industry faces a 70% rise in emissions due to commercial vessels seeking alternative routes to the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea corridor to avoid Yemeni Houthi attacks.</h1>
<p>The principle alternative route – around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa – extends voyages by thousands of miles, which has prompted operators like Møller-Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd to abandon fuel-saving practices. The enforced re-routing poses a dilemma to the global community – accept emissions hikes or reduce shipping volumes, which risks destabilising the global economy. <p><strong>Why does this matter? </strong>International shipping is a fundamental facet of the global economy and trading network, facilitating the international transfer of goods. Artificial waterways are a crucial component, cutting thousands of miles from sea routes.</p>
<p>The Suez Canal, for example, connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1VW5kBVqW50kH_H6lZ3mNW7xP8VC2QPVJSN5Q3RFV3BJYrVS-tPv2SsghzW57Mp546W316tW6DbzBR4cybr3W1WKrng2lxmSPW8sPdbK3hc0kPW3mM-yq3MvYQbW5gQtjz6M-6HZW7KmDn633B2qVW7Y4R748wL_xhVxry5C6nbzSvN2xC_Yw7-kDTW92_hxS1Nd840W34L8BD1BlTN6W5jGmlJ2Yxps_W6HljvN9dR3jVW8CwfW_4W27fZW8kxNSY7llxTtW4LR5WK1kbzw-VfL7rQ2H5l34W1w4wQC8Zj8s6W2z3td64hX9J7W6NTwQp4BjHWwW44wVt474mysLW4bwRKG5bqZ_HW8grTLW6tzm_mW2g3VTn2jtxG8N5KYy7tHM7DdW7dMLG56LZ9brW19TmpG7TydDBW49T5MD22v9cxf7YJ_Dz04" data-hs-link-id="0">saving</a> 6,000 nautical miles and reducing delivery times by three to four weeks compared to routing around Africa.</p>
<p>Last year, 24,000 vessels passed through the Suez Canal, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1Xn3m2ndW7Y8-PT6lZ3m9V4mzbS455S0CW1hXB9410QpLhN43QRT4T1QCGW6Ly01W24FGP9W25W3L986WzRBW45cxkS4Dgh7PW6_TplY5zx2XjW91x20r7GZT9qW1RfvFp8NTmwPW6MrCD76zYSb7N3fHHY-l-p7-W3Mb5Wc60SXtYW34WR7w4qzmgcN6JqVYlQ42DXW58dWXp86F8DnW9ll3cd4sdX4nW7BWMcy6vh49hN7kds-ChB0Y0W1Sdb0V3GpmCJVCyCQc84t8RGW4ChR6t81YQ9TW1GjT3c7vj1MXN2d5Gb1Z8wGrVrdX_22h3fHJW4mQnc02Xdc8rW3qXxjH8pG7F7f7Kzp4H04" data-hs-link-id="0">carrying</a> 10% of global seaborne trade. Disruptions to this waterway are costly – the last time shippers faced an impassable Suez Canal was in 2021 when the Ever Given cargo ship ran aground, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1WP3m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3npW3FRn_w1qnW8FW6thLq-3QHSzhW11x1d13WFtsgW4L6WYR5tMw1NW1Bcjnp6pZZSQW8xNgdT1Cx9JYW324D8L2vyqDmW2H2r614ZPqvTN64VHx3rn7D4VmtwCR3XGxzKW87mvr4750XZjW5d_ccZ7kv1lvW7CbW4S3z-Sd1N54_nHxQVPXjW5dbfpX79LVjQW56Tlqq6CwZClW7HJYVJ2MgPSxN4HLPPMDRXwpW902x4j3b1Gp_W4-RDG623T5KzW6BbRzF9735g7W3p12GK4G_hT6f2GbXrF04" data-hs-link-id="0">estimated</a> to have held up $9.6bn worth of trade per day.</p>
<p>The impact of shipping remains high even in the absence of disruptions to routes, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1Xn3m2ndW7Y8-PT6lZ3kXV_yYmZ3r1X2jW6mPCvn53rNvbVJh7Bz1RmyVqW1G0z1P5XZpdSV_0r6d50jwYkN50s2DT9j3czW2-M0rW14-Vy4W3L5Q6K7d6DscW65fGvd2pp6T5W7Kqxv04zRMQ-W4030zk3ZWkgZW7HyYqg54zqHrW5ySjqR7FtC1MN2WbdVsdv_QqW525wbP5-8PfBW8FzmjC2vnBH9W3GljmB6mDY2tW4KcCN1510x6zW81q30Z4q4NR7W1P9Lcc9bYRbrW6mMSz08kgq3TW1D-jsH2LnlQ9W8j3qw82tmfY9W3BfBZz34DQ1fW4RwwrD5h875mW4jwps14TJ7pkf6YknWs04" data-hs-link-id="0">accounting</a> for around 3% of global emissions – roughly equivalent to the aviation sector. Estimates suggest that shipping could represent 10% of global emissions by 2050 if current growth rates continue unabated. Shipping executives are <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1X43m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3ktW3f3KQR8hqS9HW6kVr595zhVFDW7yl0dY5TdxT4W5JDTSj69zKYvW6_JnnG3H6XtVW1b6jSw72YYsmN8pl77ZzmFn-W7l-bLc8VvxS6W4Wq-6Z1QDNXGW32YzkZ1ztt83Vb3-Xm45ltPgN6lSX9-_bxBkW3_XMT212zcKXW26KjqV9lrNV-V_TGrZ3f14HgW5_wfJz13srMzW7Nfng1507zPrW6n_MJm5Wflz4W8zdcNB69Q6z3W3FYjTS1QHJFwW2wXBb76vCJrBW5p98mW5184JDW1C72DK5Yn8mFW4dJsRT4tBslvd-2Vyq04" data-hs-link-id="0">reportedly</a> cautious to restart operations in the Red Sea region, suggesting elevated shipping emissions are likely to continue for some time.</p>
<p>The shipping industry has taken steps to increase fuel economy and decrease emissions in recent years. For example, ships have followed a “slow steaming” policy over the last decade, which involves reducing operational speed, conserving fuel, and cutting emissions of CO2 and air pollutants.</p>
<p>However, shipping giants Møller-Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have announced they are <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1X43m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3nTW8rwh333x5HcDW6HH8rK5f87HzW8zrfYd3LD-vjW7wrSmq3lQCJVW7_DSyB1j6VNKW1l7X286ml_gBN8tkKgbf__WXW5-bMhn27Cbz5W4jmxvg4Q6DwnW2MQtwd71HS3GW4dDRkW6BFTgwV7SCDw5h_L31W4XcMKL9lXBTKN4KNzKgKyPnqW3BP9Q12VHmfbW3rmf8h93bggxW3p3t-27gpqVGW7kWFSG1ZJhHNW61rYRT12pDxDW6cGJ-R4Cj5HLVfbXc41fBs4dW5s9Bx38XFfn2W24t_mK11SNZSW8LxyXr1pD1Psf5RCglx04" data-hs-link-id="0">suspending</a> this practice and increasing vessel speeds due to the additional time the alternative route enforces.</p>
<p>The shipping industry is likely to face increasing regulation in the coming years. In July 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1Xn3m2ndW7Y8-PT6lZ3nRW1vcNSz5PBBJTW2bPjq42C9fHmW6w0dc123fWBjW1YYNjx4f4h1cN8dWrSVzzMQkW64Q87H3kwMw_W7K2kRn1CBBSHN2smQRzD4-7TW3QxqSp4b8kRYVTt9NJ6h5zksN1sNfDqy97smW2mXzVx3bpHbnW7Gkcpf4bNC-cW3sy3lH54SWsTW3mVthg4N-0Y3V_QSwB7W-y2yW7pCjXT3TY2PsW26f7C93zKhMRW68nfdS21VdSlW2-c7Gj6qhmVfW8NwF3-8jm-1fV1STPK5zg8yFW7wwB5F1gLdG2VbFZqw5HBP7QW5WgBLK4j_kLFW8RSDFP431n3cf1jklgd04" data-hs-link-id="0">announced</a> stricter decarbonisation targets, including a goal of achieving net-zero emissions from international shipping “close to” 2050.</p>
<p>The body also established interim goals of reducing emissions by 20-30% by 2030 and 70-80% by 2040, compared to 2008 levels. The current geopolitical crisis in the Middle East poses a serious risk to these goals, sending the industry’s emissions in the wrong direction.</p>
<p>The Suez Canal is not the only major waterway facing significant reductions in traffic. Drought in Central America has severely <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1Wb5kBVqW5BWr2F6lZ3m5W46_PfK7JVNRTW2JNrF763J6LyW2yR8H_1G919WW4fYDl61K6TqrW1vy0q-6FCqKdW92CP7Z2c7z01W68W3Y75lJkVCW41dGfb6VxZJ8W3P5p6W92FFbxN1mtLQ1gdKvwW7MK6rY1QFVfmW1XrgFK76qlj0N2VW6wqLdp27N2fQSdCfPH0gN5pfTky9GCBsW41Y7z_77HkhMW8pvpRR2QlH1kW5qM9WG8fjJXVW7dt9PC7Rjgm0V-1SxZ3HfTmmW2DBj4D8nGK9SW8FT6vj76d4KvW1YgYG25xdtjyN2qlY_8M4TQnW6sMWRC8-lvTWW4y0cQf4z75JQW20pcFk6JDWcgVVrnJY6VwKR0W2NBM979fl6npW1MkwDC3p-jM1W8b9n6K8tfJFhW7zJ8wK2Y-HXyW4tmCc67-xdrZW1QFT883cwDtpdfwX7b04" data-hs-link-id="0">impacted</a> maritime trade passing through the Panama Canal, which links the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean.</p>
<p>Around 2.5% of seaborne trade <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1Wb5kBVqW5BWr2F6lZ3kSW6pST6L3hWkb0W2jJ0dF45NKqcW93ZNWF4ddNY5W2lXvrT2K62V-W7XgdXL5PqwsLW8Gbd887b_phTW5PzkRh5b4DkXW5ChQq748rvtnN42JyS2flmf2W89mM3S4QZrvWN2w8y4rLF1RmV63Qkx6VBtyNW7Qsy7f4Tk82FW1yyLl71ngBNxW4BJwZC6VHQX_W6V974g4BMdKNW5cbMqD8Q44-sN8jtT7CbbZxsW2f4Sr85pc4cWV71tFz3BVpvBT28QV86ks5cW100-2s6Xnf8tW7vFCQX6rz095N70QHlM9z2_tW8YQp-S7YD6NmW7r327z5g4rYgW3SMQ6j49HdKpVfTWNm5Nk0f9W6BKKHj4G9sKgW5RnSK114PjyGW4Ml7YK4ygyWkW6rQWKk5wkwj5W8ct-SD13yl-tW70fZCK4PKMhNf2g_1Vv04" data-hs-link-id="0">passes</a> through the canal, but due to a severe drought-induced reduction to the level of the Gatun Lake that feeds the waterway, the canal’s water levels are far lower than usual. Consequently, the Panama Canal Authority has <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVq21j6hPhbTW1jss_c8p_LF7W50jS-p5b4Qx2N6pj1XH3m2ndW8wLKSR6lZ3q3W4XNBTF8SpkF8W1LjPBN71MqQwW5bBRgq5scjnSW73bK2X4GnrJGN2H2php1tNKWW3GD4_98Zlxb_W6Sg9T73St0gDW7ymnc52pl-bWW7Cl3C752GXZnVkXNTr1xp69XW4GjLkZ5sNmNBW41XzNy15RrJgW93QNwz12yCbZW6sl8HP4lRhf0W9lkNLs6xVTlkVnPrgd29R3PYW6VtWBx3h8JH7W3BmpKC176SPdW17vmg76y5xYFTWwNn8_kyNPW63wcg18DPBvGW5TR_wV1-WY7qW359VvQ2LnFSZW3BBvWJ54t-WDW5BlQnn7vKM6lW45yZvj7QSPr2W8TrV2v2jTR4NW8nYm8x19mjfkf62mGh204" data-hs-link-id="0">reduced</a> traffic through the corridor by approximately 40% this year.</p>

<p>UN secretary-general António Guterres has called this report a “code red” for humanity. It highlights that emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from human activities are responsible for approximately 1.1°C of warming since 1850-1900.</p>

<p>To avoid global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C of warming over the next 20 years, we cannot emit more than 400bn tonnes of CO₂—a quantity we are currently set to emit in less than a decade.</p>
<p>Pledges for net zero are coming in thick and fast as we <a href="https://ocean.economist.com/innovation/articles/blue-power-future-of-ocean-energy">slowly transition to solar, wind, biomass, hydro, geothermal and hydrogen energy</a>. Carbon capture and storage is being attempted, but as recent forest fires attest, mass tree-planting cannot be our only solution.</p>
<p>So, what else can be done? And why is the ocean, which makes up more than 70% of the planet’s surface and is the Earth’s largest homeostatic mechanism, being largely ignored in the global climate-crisis discussion?</p>
<p>The ocean is suffering from the effects of global warming, having absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat produced since the Industrial Revolution. Coral bleaching, marine heat waves, interrupted fish migration and ocean acidification are all evidence of this.</p>
<p>Moreover, ocean currents are amplifying the effect of rising temperatures and melting the polar caps to a point that could see sea levels rising by one metre by 2100, according to the IPCC’s report <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/srocc/chapter/chapter-4-sea-level-rise-and-implications-for-low-lying-islands-coasts-and-communities/"><i>Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate</i></a>.</p>
<p><strong>But in its vastness, the ocean also holds solutions to the climate crisis.</strong></p>

                    <p>On Jane Fraser’s first day as chief executive officer at Citigroup, she announced plans to achieve net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions in the bank’s financing activities by 2050. Finance has finally caught up to climate’s threat to the stability of the financial system.</p>
<p>Yet despite the fact that the oceans cover some 71% of the planet, produce at least 50% of the oxygen, and are the main source of protein for more than 1bn people, few leaders seem to have grasped the fact that <a href="https://ocean.economist.com/governance/articles/cop26-and-the-ocean-climate-nexus">climate and oceans are inextricably linked</a>.</p>
<p>Speaking at the <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/news/special-envoy-ocean-speech-3rd-abu-dhabi-sustainable-finance-forum-25205">Sustainable Finance Forum</a> in Abu Dhabi, Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, said: “We can’t have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean. That is why sustainable finance for the sustainable blue economy is of vital importance to us all.”</p>
<div class="css-jtawwa">
<h3 class="small css-skbn7t" data-testid="content-label">Significant value</h3>
</div>
<div class="css-1lfg7ey">
<p>Statistics from the 2015 report “Reviving the Ocean Economy: <a href="https://wwf.panda.org/?245010/REPORT-Reviving-the-Ocean-Economy-The-case-for-action---2015">The Case for Action</a>” make the most powerful case. The value of the ocean’s asset base is US$24trn, while the annual value of goods and services produced from ocean-related economic activities is US$2.5trn, which makes the ocean equivalent to the seventh largest economy globally. It is estimated that by 2030, 40m people will be employed in ocean-based industries.</p>
<p>Just as there is <a href="https://ocean.economist.com/blue-finance/articles/how-investors-can-finance-a-sustainable-ocean-economy">significant value in the ocean economy</a>, threats to the ocean’s resources through overexploitation, misuse, pollution, loss of biodiversity and climate change lead to significant costs. A World Bank report estimates that profits forgone from overfishing amount to<a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/press-release/2017/02/14/giving-oceans-a-break-could-generate-83-billion-in-additional-benefits-for-fisheries"> US$83bn</a> annually, while ocean plastic pollution <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0025326X19302061">costs society up to US$2.5trn</a> a year.</p>
<p>In addition, a 600-page landmark review commissioned by the UK Treasury, “<a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/962785/The_Economics_of_Biodiversity_The_Dasgupta_Review_Full_Report.pdf">The Economics of Biodiversity</a>”, has highlighted the extreme risks posed by the failure to take account of the rapid depletion of the natural world.</p>
<p>At the <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/world-ocean-summit-2021-accelerating-sustainable-economy-koehring/?trackingId=6L%2FZKRSJS%2FgM0pOkDlGLWw%3D%3D">World Ocean Summit in March</a><i> </i>one concept stood out: global warming has weakened the Gulf Stream system to the slowest pace in more than a thousand years. This is a stark reminder of the crucial link between the ocean and climate change. Is this a tipping point, or have we already passed the point of irreversible damage?</p>
<p>I believe there are signs of hope.</p>
