<p>Encompassing 71% of the Earth&#8217;s surface, the ocean has endured the primary effects of human-induced global warming. It has absorbed more than 90% of the heat resulting from climate change and has sequestered around one-quarter of carbon emissions.</p>

                    <p>This has severe consequences, heightening risks for ocean and coastal ecosystems, as well as posing threats to the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities.</p>
<p>Despite its importance, the ocean has long been overlooked in the fight against climate change. <p>It was not until 2019 that the need to strengthen our understanding of the linkage between the ocean and climate change was acknowledged. <p><strong>COP27 – </strong> At COP27, billed the &#8220;implementation COP,&#8221; the <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVWz0Q29p54SW3nGFZ42vPVq-W824bMN56wWTLN7bK2-T3m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3pZW5-71Dy1m-hDJW2FWBF69cgCr6W1lT_tw7qLf3gVq1tNC1n5G6yV3nPDW5JhX5lW1Bd8sG5wP-XLW1L10SF54NMfCW4RLFxM7Z3LK4VHXpjt4KrvyLW1rVL9d69_3CwW2Cn28n3j434bW8r7wzF5g5wMzV4jCBg7xMq6cW3kvdJJ6wcpGGW39Gctb24LXvWW9b_Smk9b9MR4W84QV0b7G-32wN5lP13tCbMH7W5lKkqB225j8sW1_XKGD6910Y-W3w5yWR9cgXv7W4hyVcd4yMMc-f8dMvX204" data-hs-link-id="0">Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan</a> was agreed. From an ocean sustainability perspective, two standouts emerge from the Implementation Plan.</p>
<p>Firstly, Parties are encouraged to &#8216;blue&#8217; their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), long-term strategies and adaptation techniques, facilitating ocean-based climate action at the national scale.</p>
<p>Secondly, the Plan further embeds the Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue into the global climate regime. Moving forward, two facilitators are chosen to host the dialogue, and responsible for deciding two topics for discussion.</p>
<p>Outcomes of the Dialogue are then presented to Parties at the COP. This year, the topics cover coastal ecosystem restoration including blue carbon, and fisheries and food security. <p>Blue carbon – the carbon captured and sequestered by marine ecosystems – also gained momentum at COP27. Conservation International, alongside a coalition of ocean stakeholders, released the <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVWz0Q29p54SW3nGFZ42vPVq-W824bMN56wWTLN7bK2_s3m2ndW7Y8-PT6lZ3nvW254QMP8z1sk8W46DsS85CPFp0W2XdjW25-Xm2qVXz1HG4f5DP7W4kwKC14DWPM9W2brhBG2rb196W1PhgMN8RnDF0W1_2nQr4fKfD2W5YpXvM4W7psfN8jppV7HfHd9W1vSBT51k0MQlW3p8fFF2bnqVGW81lt-f10-_-3W59qt8d98ckvHW7B-qJz8Cj95wW94-5Pj5rNkMfW8vxz_15zjv-DW2l0fPK4gLzJCW4Ldvrk1dny9KW11jBtf4xX7HyW8C-Zy48LKbbvW1YL37s36q8ZqW8QFgkt3QWGxlW78Nfsc2MB7KdW1gK1Q43gYNQQW3HsZ156mk_Xpf4_qJST04" data-hs-link-id="0">High-Quality Blue Carbon Ocean Principles and Guidance</a> framework, seeking to govern a voluntary carbon market expected to reach a value of $50bn by 2030.</p>
<p>Mangroves have been the subject of blue carbon commitments, acting as a key marine ecosystem and carbon sink. Hence, the <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVWz0Q29p54SW3nGFZ42vPVq-W824bMN56wWTLN7bK2_83m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3nLW2zz9qv3W4j6tW7G73gz8MT5w6W5HDDlP2S5ycpW1lQXHG95Kqc8W42CF_n7qh2vQV62vPc6H8DP3W7_Q8Yb2SrB-0W74251G7chLrdW54834V4STGTfW8FNFwL3jCJpyW7mZwY554wjvkV8d9FZ646jGTW2qTCFZ6Lz-lQW8jqth11PM0DbW1XlKpM54MWklW3sGz__8sWp-HW1rgbtB77j7BsW43NZ1c9crCP8N341zcXvT1NJW1RnpZq3Tt078W1Vql_q2WgYQNN87_glyq4wlhVZwR6V88qpnWW2R_fnm2B5yD1f5rfQkq04" data-hs-link-id="0">Mangrove Breakthrough</a> was announced as part of the Sharm El Sheikh Adaptation Agenda, aiming to raise $4bn to secure the future of 15 million hectares of mangroves globally by 2030.</p>
<p>COP27 also marked the inaugural year for the <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVWz0Q29p54SW3nGFZ42vPVq-W824bMN56wWTLN7bK2-z3m2ndW69sMD-6lZ3lRW3W17YQ5YhWFfW57vXtL4kv2xDW52Q5qv7CMK_bVnlGZx25YV5dW8Q3mF41_T1Z3W55Dx9k3lhknMW6dF2dr82_j21W7N2vpj1_YL4dW9k6k0J4j7Fw5W2y6YW0589dCCW4VXjv66S2c20W4QQkzZ3vHqL1W4MMGGP2h10mqW64QnzT2p4XX0W69nHk57VJk1VW7z3wc49fQrB5W1wjrBJ5Bwzd6W3yy2F53DytHmW5ytZ_B62G8HYW2RDnwm327tkJf8-tZjx04" data-hs-link-id="0">Ocean Pavilion</a>, a space hosting over 70 events and workshops led by 20 scientific institutions and a range of influential stakeholders.</p>
<p><strong>COP28 –  </strong>Amongst a barrage of stories set to come out of this year&#8217;s conference, keep an eye out for these three developments – the Dubai Ocean Declaration, the global stock-take and, the Loss and Damage fund.</p>
<p><strong>Dubai Ocean Declaration – </strong>Ocean Pavilion is calling for increased action and monitoring of the ocean, <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVWz0Q29p54SW3nGFZ42vPVq-W824bMN56wWTLN7bK2_83m2ndW7lCdLW6lZ3q2N50Y40NhKbT5W8kgDQY2H-c31N6zYdz-VVCNRN24PLWhJ1tL4W28rG1S4hM2wwW4KZ6RK1nZ57rW944c8K6dGkHPW6s9n__2g8YxfW4LMHNb5MNrCBW6zL8Ct6Y4lF_W49J73B5BNv9wW1jpVCs8BxTsPW7-Ksfr3KLZKRN1fL3lzS3zl7W8w6vlV6bXLfmW5fNGyg3_D4knW6W-S-D7L_5s6W4hNBGV7-_KSdW8dS7M-2gC3y4W7gD3Kp27yGBqW2l0q3573q1LhN2WwJ-FH-nXNW74YY--19ms6ZN3Fv1RJc9yqpf1rrfJK04" data-hs-link-id="0">producing</a> the Dubai Ocean Declaration for guidance and commitment. COP28 participants are urged to adopt measures for enhanced ocean protection, starting with bolstering observational capacity to address climate change risks.</p>
<p>Key initiatives involve refining carbon flux estimates, monitoring emerging carbon removal strategies, and measuring crucial climate and biological variables.</p>
<p>The call extends to building capacity in developing nations, fostering international cooperation, and integrating traditional knowledge. The proposal underscores an urgent need for a robust research and technology programme, emphasising transparency and ethical practices.</p>
<p><strong>Global stock-take – </strong> Every five years, Paris Agreement signatories must revise their NDCs. First, a global stock-take <a href="https://cKf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VVWz0Q29p54SW3nGFZ42vPVq-W824bMN56wWTLN7bK2-T3m2ndW6N1vHY6lZ3m6W6fQ2-36VPnM8W7vqwkQ210Cf2N7QrMSjZmrFpN828SQQKsn3bW13X0xl9k7ZldW7-q2N-7rhCpfW12MdQL2DvCvGW3P21N54yg-x9W2lg2HW5zdhxXW7pPYXC87hVR1W1tszRl5TykkZW349JhP43gn-wW9ljtLH40T5nSW5fX2qc11c_wHMdDdMtp96qPW31jJMS88FKHDW2gdv5b33VvV-W3HdfpK3GK0XsN1k1j-lyP8C9W8DlLmb4PhdvJMbV6GDjxBzYN4X4ZJRh3Yc_d_vlK-04" data-hs-link-id="0">assesses</a> the overall progress of climate actions globally. <p><strong>Loss and Damage Fund – </strong> A milestone at COP27 was the establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund. Year-long discussions on the fund&#8217;s creation faced hurdles, with disagreements over contributors, amounts, and recipients.</p>

<p id="viewer-8m80m" class="mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">The study found that carefully planned actions such as removing invasive species and supporting coastal “connector” species could go some way in supporting island ecosystems. Beyond this, they can also address biodiversity loss, declining ocean health and climate change.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-7ad01" class="mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Connector species such as seals, seabirds and land crabs play a key role in ensuring healthy land-sea ecosystems and facilitating the exchange of nutrients between oceans and islands. However, important connector species are increasingly threatened and driven toward extinction by invasive mammals such as rats, which eat young hatchlings or bird eggs. This is aided by the fact that endemic island species do not have evolutionary defence mechanisms against non-native species. The decline of such valuable connector species carries direct consequences to both land and marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangroves.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-3logt" class="mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Seabirds, for example, feed in open ocean areas and bring high quantities of nutrients to both island and ocean ecosystems through guano deposits – accumulated excrements which contain natural mineral deposits and high levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium that support plant and vegetation growth. Islands with high seabird populations have been linked to higher fish populations, increased coral recovery rates and faster-growing coral reefs.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-7kqcp" class="mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">The isolated nature of islands means their ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to ecosystem changes, including overfishing or the introduction of invasive species. On the other hand, island ecosystems can recover rapidly and bounce back when supported by restoration measures.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-b461h" class="mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">The study highlighted six environmental factors, which can inform the selection of locations that would benefit most from the removal of invasive species – rainfall, vegetation cover, soil hydrology, elevation, oceanographic productivity and wave energy. The most significant marine co-benefits are expected to be seen on islands with calmer tides, high rainfall and other conditions associated with high land-sea connectivity.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-5jtci" class="mm8Nw _1j-51 roLFQS _1FoOD _3M0Fe Z63qyL roLFQS public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">For instance, Floreana Island in Ecuador’s Galapagos Archipelago, and Sonsorol Island in Palau, are islands with high land-sea connectivity potential. Both islands have joined the environmental campaign <a class="_3Bkfb _1lsz7" href="https://ckf4804.na1.hubspotlinks.com/Ctc/OP+113/cKf4804/VWJh-L4KQxcqW2Q6DtG2csV5VVJvnzy4TL_9dMGxfTp3lSbtV1-WJV7CgKh-W8jwP7Y19gB3FW8pG9kt8bCD-DW7x4k7K4psWSJW6XWdXb2Gm6_-W5MP1tV6xfZY9VLCd-N7WN7QtN6y2jkScrnbPW43-M5D7FWxKbW5B3DPd2HjQddW5hs7Xs2S8vjHW3642f38XRspNW6mWj3C7m3_h4W51FLM81q_QFVW3gN32s7xW5zZW54d2vp4P64jyW39gz888VN7sxW7BZS9R7zBkg1W7TZjgm7mcDflW59Svqj8hj6NQW8F4MgT82TjlH3gcq1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="_3zM-5">Island-Ocean Connection Challenge</u></a>. From a social perspective, these benefits will also support local communities, which can play a crucial role in implementing restoration efforts.</span></p>

Researchers have found that the electromagnetism produced by the cables affects the creatures’ blood cells. The crabs are attracted to the cables, which are used for offshore renewable energy, when they emit an electromagnetic field of 500 microteslas or more, according to Professor Alastair Lyndon. </span></p>

Protecting the ocean and its marine habitats – which can sequester <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=4b6c6a88bc&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">more carbon</u></a> per unit area than forests – is critical to mitigating climate change. In the UK, saltmarsh and seagrass meadows store around 220 million tonnes of blue carbon, 93% of which is sequestered in marine sediments.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-8l5b2" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">The <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=99dfa5c10d&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">report</u></a> highlights three key areas to be addressed. First, tackling direct emissions from fishing vessels. UK fishing fleets generate an estimated 914.4 kilotons of CO2 annually – the equivalent of the annual energy usage of over 110,000 US households. WWF, the MCS and RSPB highlight that over half of the UK’s fleet still in operation is over 30 years old. Most vessels in this ageing fleet are <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=06af46570d&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">powered</u></a> by carbon-intensive heavy fuel oils, while half relies heavily on diesel.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-4v0v7" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Second, marine biodiversity should be improved by minimising and potentially reversing damage from poor practices and destructive fishing gear. Around 87% of fish caught by UK vessels use a combination of demersal and beam trawl, and seine nets, which damage muddy sediments and seagrass. When disturbed from the seabed carbon re-mineralises into the ocean and can be released back into the atmosphere, increasing greenhouse gas levels.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-4dr1" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Third, the UK’s marine habitats require increased protection to improve their ability to act as a carbon sink, the report states, as blue carbon is further extracted when fish stocks are depleted. The first UK fish stock audit post-Brexit, published earlier this year, found only three of the UK’s top ten fish populations are fished at or under their maximum <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=061eb16674&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">sustainability yield</u></a>. Alongside fish and shellfish, larger species are also considered <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=1fc24286ae&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">carbon stores</u></a>, with species such as tuna estimated to be 10% to 15% carbon. This leaves the ocean system when they are fished.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-bu76o" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Adopting a climate-smart approach would support the UK’s Fisheries Act, passed last year, which recognises climate impacts in fisheries but has yet to take action in addressing the issue.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-b7klm" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Companies are developing solutions to decarbonise vessels, with some exploring alternative fuels such as <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=ff444228a9&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">hydrogen</u></a> and <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=732091913b&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">ammonia</u></a> to cut carbon from larger, long-range maritime transport. On a smaller scale, electrification is being looked at by several figures in the maritime industry, such as Bio Feeder, which announced plans to charter Norway’s first electric fish feed <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=94dd801de9&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">vessel</u></a> this summer. Others are experimenting with sail-powered cargo fleets, such as <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=1f6f52b403&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">Timbercoast</u></a>, while <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=52b556bf1e&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">SailCargo</u></a>’s Ceiba vessel combines traditional timber sailing masts with solar-powered engines to achieve commercial-scale zero-carbon shipping.</span></p>

Cornwall-based Fal Oysters fishery is rooted in low-emission fishing practices, using just sail power and a <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://curationcorp.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=ac0d4f5d34&amp;e=6f89ffc078" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">lower impact</u></a> approach to harvesting seafood.</span></p>

<p id="viewer-fq12l" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr"><strong>What’s happening?</strong> Three world heritage listed marine sites in Australia – the Great Barrier Reef, Shark Bay and the Ningaloo coast – store over two billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) in their seagrass meadows, coastal mangroves and tidal marshes, according to a report from UNESCO. The agency has calculated the blue carbon stored in its 50 such sites, and estimated they collectively house around five billion tonnes of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. The sites in Australia store almost 40% of this total. </span></p>
<p class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr"><strong>Why does this matter? </strong>Alongside forests and other land-based ecosystems, which more commonly come to mind when thinking about carbon sinks, blue carbon ecosystems are increasingly recognised as having a key role to play in tackling climate change. </span></p>
<p class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">UNESCO’s <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000375565/PDF/375565eng.pdf.multi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">report</u></a> indicates that marine world heritage sites, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean’s area, represent 15% of total blue carbon assets. Such marine habitats store carbon accumulated over thousands of years, which is locked into sediments. They also sequester <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://www.iucn.org/resources/issues-briefs/blue-carbon#issue" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">more carbon</u></a> per unit area than terrestrial forests – and at a faster rate. Coastal habitats are particularly important, representing less than 2% of ocean area but accounting for around half the carbon sequestered in ocean sediments.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-ach1o" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr"> The Great Barrier Reef, which has a conservation outlook status of “<a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/6D5640E2-4EF5-4703-990C-54056F7C4652" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">critical</u></a>”, holds more blue carbon than any other of UNESCO’s sites, demonstrating the importance of protecting its seagrass meadows as well as its corals. UNESCO estimates the reef’s seagrass meadows hold one billion megagrams of organic carbon, or 11% of the world’s total. Its tidal marsh area holds a similar amount. </span></p>
<p class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Action is needed to protect the reef and its corals. The Australian government recently <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://reportcard.reefplan.qld.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">ranked</u></a> the marine environment along the reef’s coastline at a “D” grade, though improvements in water quality were recorded at some Australian land catchment areas with run-off that affects the reef – such as Cape York and Fitzroy – due to improved agricultural practices. Alongside scientific <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/1CDC3C7A-C2B9-439C-81C9-587A1949D04B" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">efforts</u></a> to protect the reef ecosystem, market mechanisms are being employed to improve water run-off, such as the HSBC-backed <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/4B4C6748-35B8-484E-B79A-7400D7A5C6C7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">“Reef Credits”</u></a> market which works in a similar fashion to carbon credits by assigning a value to improving the quality of water flowing into the reef.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-177p4" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">A further recent <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03371-z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">study</u></a> looking at blue carbon has quantified that, alongside its negative biodiversity implications, the practice of <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/794C7287-1D27-49FF-9992-A836D38F40DD" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">bottom trawling</u></a> is <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://www.climatechangenews.com/2021/03/17/scientists-push-add-huge-fish-trawling-emissions-national-inventories/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">responsible</u></a> for “one billion tonnes of underwater emissions” each year. This is comparable to Germany’s CO2 emissions, and has also been <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/climate-change-oceans-fishing/carbon-emissions-from-trawler-fishing-on-a-par-with-aviation-say-ocean-researchers-idUSL8N2LF3C1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">likened</u></a> to the emissions output of the aviation industry. The study estimates Croatia’s bottom-trawling emissions, for example, at 23 million tonnes a year – an equivalent amount to the country’s recorded greenhouse gas inventory. </span></p>
<p class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Not all the CO2 released from seafloor sediments enters the atmosphere, but that which stays in the ocean causes acidification. The researchers state that increasing the status of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and banning industrial fishing in 3.6% of the ocean would cut 90% of the risk of carbon disturbance from bottom trawling. This can be applied to the UK where, <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/D78CA34A-FBF9-42C1-9964-8D026A3D887A" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">according</u></a> to the Marine Conservation Society, trawlers operate in all but one of the country’s MPAs. Recently, however, the UK government has <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/68D2A1A0-A734-413B-B96F-321AA13563DC" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">proposed</u></a> to outlaw bottom trawling in four MPAs including the Dogger Bank special conservation area – a key breeding ground for cod, whiting and sand eels. </span></p>
<p class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Alongside protecting existing stores of blue carbon, seeding new ones is equally important. Also, in the UK, <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://app.curationcorp.com/story/B5FB6F25-143A-4B6D-8C31-BDC63DB04B22" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">one million</u></a> seagrass seeds are to be planted off the Welsh coast to create a 20,000 sq m meadow as part of one of the largest-ever projects to restore seagrass habitats.</span></p>

                    <p><strong>What’s happening?</strong> The UK economy could benefit from a £50bn ($68.2m) boost if the sea is allowed to recover from overfishing. If the UK continues on its current path, however, the loss of coastal ecosystems and fisheries would cost £15bn a year by 2050, according to WWF and Sky Ocean Rescue. The organisations are appealing to the UK government to embark on an ocean recovery strategy in H1 2021. The strategy should include the restoration of coastal habitats, the protection of a third of the nation’s seas and the introduction of sustainable fisheries and seafood production.</p>
<p><strong>Why does this matter?</strong> As WWF and Sky Ocean Rescue’s <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=a1159decb0&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">report</u></a> highlights, the UK has <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=6910598ca5&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">failed</u></a> to ensure good standards have been reached in 11 out of 15 ocean health indicators – including those related to fish, birds and the state of the seabed. The organisations state the situation can be improved to the tune of £50bn in economic benefits by 2050, against a cost of around £38bn.</p>
<p>The report estimates only around 1% of the UK’s seas are legally protected, which WWF wants to see extended to at least a third – which would not just benefit biodiversity but also contribute to a green recovery from Covid-19, and to the UK’s net-zero emissions target. WWF <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=d8bf6dd0ad&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">estimates</u></a> marine habitats are up to 20 times more effective at sequestering CO2 than land-based forests.</p>
<p>The report was released a matter of weeks after the UK’s transition period ended following it leaving the EU. While it is uncertain whether the fish swimming in UK waters are now indeed “<a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=f58ce5bc03&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">happier</u></a>” as a result of the change in the governing framework surrounding them, and the <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=8670058e2e&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">gradual transfer</u></a> of quotas to the UK fishing fleet, following the scope of the deal and initial frictions UK fishermen certainly <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=60a1d51499&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">are not</u></a>. Scottish fishers have been <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=fd7197dc1a&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">particularly affected</u></a> by additional paperwork, leading Prime Minister Boris Johnson to <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=c98b6b4157&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">announce</u></a> a £23m compensation scheme for exporters affected by associated delays.</p>
<p>How Brexit will impact fishing and ocean sustainability longer term remains to be seen. The UK government has <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=013c57dc8b&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">said</u></a> it will invest £100m to “modernise” the fishing industry, but there is <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=ae3d866c75&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">appetite</u></a> for the departure from the EU to be seized as an opportunity to up sustainability standards.</p>
<p>The Marine Conservation Society has <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=ed5f0b8f72&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">said</u></a> it is critical that protections for the UK seabed from bottom trawling are put in place following Brexit, as ocean-floor sediments act as vital carbon stores. It estimates trawlers operate in all-but-one of the UK’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and that they damaged 98% of MPA seabed between 2015 and 2018. Similar statistics were <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=3c0acdbb7c&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">reported</u></a> by NGO Oceana. There is long-standing opposition to trawling, with Blue Marine Foundation among many other organisations describing it as a practice that &#8220;<a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=f1dd39bd6a&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">makes no sense economically or environmentally</u></a>&#8220;. In a recent win for environmentalists, a Scottish judge has <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=31d5114eee&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">ruled</u></a> ministers acted unlawfully in blocking a no-trawl scheme off the Isle of Skye.</p>
<p>WWF <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=46021686be&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">says</u></a> ending industrial trawling and allowing stocks to recover could result in an additional 420,000 tonnes of fish a year for the UK, worth around £440m. Its analysis also points to the value of promoting ocean sustainability for recreational benefits, reduced emissions, job creation and renewable energy generation, alongside carbon capture and flood protection.</p>
<p>From a broader perspective, as nations look to recover from Covid-19 in a sustainable manner, the ”blue recovery” potential of coastal states has been <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=f95948691b&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">highlighted</u></a> by the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. A <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=277be31a73&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">report</u></a> from the panel shows that addressing overfishing and investing in sustainable aquaculture would generate $6.7tn in benefits worldwide over the next 30 years. In terms of other recommendations, while the UK doesn’t have any mangroves to restore, it does have a sizable offshore wind industry, within which investors can see £17 returned for every £1 invested, according to the panel. Late last year the leaders of 14 countries, under the High Level Panel, <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=b29de47536&amp;e=f80dc8eaf8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer"><u class="D-jZk">committed</u></a> to ending overfishing and managing oceans within their jurisdictions sustainably by 2025.</p>

Earlier research on adult fish alone had suggested just 5% would struggle with temperature rises of 5C. This study suggests that even if the Paris Agreement on climate change’s preferred goal of restricting warming to 1.5C is met, temperatures will still be too high for 10% of fish in their current habitats.</span></p>

This allows one species’ waste <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=3fc213f1cd&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">to be utilised</a> as fertiliser and feed for other crops. This could result, for example, in the combination of farming finfish alongside seaweed or shellfish that re-capture the waste for their growth.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-fp9t8" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Despite the practice&#8217;s potential environmental and economic benefits, and its long-standing use in Asia, IMTA projects in Europe have been hindered by <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=b57e98a993&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">poor commercial performance</a>. Academic <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=32db437124&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">research</a> indicates this is due to a lack of support from funding agencies and industry, as well as relatively low R&amp;D knowledge.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-1muc3" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">The EU’s <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=534b919b4d&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">ASTRAL project</a>, part of its Horizon 2020 programme, aims to address this by developing IMTA production chains for Atlantic markets. The programme will build on the <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=52c53377f0&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">Belém Statement</a> on Atlantic marine research between the EU, Brazil and South Africa, and it also includes Argentina, Brazil, France, Ireland, Nigeria, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa and Spain. It will bring together open offshore, flow-through inshore and recirculation labs with an aim of increasing circularity 60% compared to monoculture aquaculture.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-2531v" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">If the project is a success it will increase the potential for revenue diversification among aquaculture producers. It forms part of the EU’s long-term <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=36dbfc21b5&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">Blue Growth</a> strategy to support sustainable growth in maritime and marine sectors.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-beh5n" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">Of course in Europe, and elsewhere, aquaculture has taken a hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This has resulted in support packages from European member states to, at least partly, support the sector, most recently in <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=d77358cce7&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">Italy</a>. Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, and amid Covid-19, Lebanon <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=b42c4e2d78&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">is looking</a> to aquaculture as a means of improving its economic situation and food security – the country currently imports 90% of its seafood.</span></p>
<p id="viewer-6op1j" class="xVISr Y9Dpf bCMSCT OZy-3 lnyWN yMZv8w bCMSCT public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 fixed-tab-size public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr"><span class="B2EFF public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr">More broadly, analysis <a class="TWoY9 itht3" href="https://ocean14capital.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8d45d8de865232193bf57473c&amp;id=d19331eeb6&amp;e=fe0cbd066b" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer noopener" data-hook="linkViewer">suggests</a> the EU’s attempts to improve its aquaculture industry over recent years have struggled – even without taking into account the impacts of Covid-19. Initiatives focused on sustainable growth, such as the above, can perhaps provide longer-term value by focusing on sustainability.</span></p>
